Panta Astiazaran

Born in Montevideo. In 1961 he began to conduct his studies as a self-taught photographer, making a temporary pause in 1965. In 1967 he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine. He started to travel as an independent photographer in 1970, publishing his photographs in ‘Veja’, ‘Zero Hora’ and ‘O Estado de Sao Paulo’ from Brazil and ‘Panorama’ from Buenos Aires. In 1977 he established in Brazil. He took courses in diving medicine in France. Between 1977 and 1991 he was dedicated to working in the sea as a medical doctor specialized in diving and operating decompression chambers, specializing in deep diving offshore. He worked in Africa, Europe, and Brazil for the French company Comex and continued with his personal projects. In 1980 he published the book ‘Como Agua entre as Maos’ (Like Water in Hands) in Rio de Janeiro. He collaborated with the weekly newsletters ‘Jaque’, ‘Brecha’, and ‘Alternativa’. Between 1992 and 1994 he dedicated full time to photography, dividing his activities between teaching, selling photographies and making assignment reportages.

He worked systematically on a project on popular religion in Latin America called ‘Latinoamérica y Dios’ (Latin America and God). He also collaborated on a number of occasions with the newspaper ‘El País Cultural’. In 1995 he started to work for the magazine ‘Tres’ as a photo editor. In August 1997 he became Consulting Editor in ‘Tres’, while simultaneously making photo reports with his own texts. He worked for several advertising agencies selling reportage photos as artworks and also as a private photography teacher. Starting from October that year he exhibited in a virtual space at the Virtual Museum (MUVA) of El País, together with a series of pictures from the painter Luis Solari. In 1999 he received the Morosoli Prize for his complete photographic work, from the Lolita Rubial Foundation. In 2000 he began to work as Photo Editor and photographer at the Latin American Desk of Agence France Presse in Montevideo until 2015. In the meantime, he continued to work as an independent photographer by making editorial work and as a photojournalist. In 2009 he published the book ‘Cuidando al General’ (Taking Care of the General), which is about his participation in the security group of the founder of The Broad Front (Frente Amplio), General Líber Seregni, from 1971 to 1972. His work has been exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions worldwide.
