Born in Montevideo. Photographer and editor since 40 years ago. In 1974 he took refuge in Geneva, Switzerland where he finished his studies in graphic arts, within the branch of photography, and begins his professional activities first as a graphic designer and then as a photographer for diverse international organizations (UN, OMS, ILO, CMI, etc). He made his first assignment reportages in Mexico and later in Nicaragua (1982). He works in Nicaragua until 1986 for the French photo agency Sipa Press, the Ministry of Education and as director of the photography department of the Nicaraguan news agency Agencia Nueva Nicaragua. In 1984 he was invited to Canada to make a tour with his exposition ‘Testimonios de Nicaragua’ with the Canadian photographer and sociologist Deborah Barndt. In this three month tour, the sample was exhibited in 15 different cities from coast to coast in Canada. During this time he was parallelly running workshops on popular communication methodologies. He went back to Uruguay in 1986 and connected with the Prisma photo agency, making photo reportages in Brazil, Paraguay, Nicaragua, and Uruguay.
He also collaborated until 1999 in diverse photography documentaries, financed by the Municipality, about housing programs and urbanism. Between 1992 and 1994 he produced three major assignment reportages in Bolivia for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). In 1997 he made a photo reportage in the Neuquen province in Argentina about the life and local development projects linked to the Mapuche indigenous peoples. He also participated in 1997 as a photographer for the production of the book and exhibition ‘7 fotógrafos X Montevideo’ (7 photographers through Montevideo) supported by the Municipality. From 1994 until 2007 he held the workshop on photojournalism at the Foto Club Uruguayo. In the beginning of 1999, he made the photographic documentation about the reconstruction of Nicaragua and El Salvador after the Hurricane Mitch for the Swiss NGO GVOM. From this work resulted, the edition book ‘Souvenirs du Présent’, and an itinerant exhibition for Switzerland and France that was exhibited in around 15 cities. In 2004 he made a coverage assigned by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. This production was to broadcast the work made by the SDC, in collaboration with governmental organizations and Cuban ngos, with publications and exhibitions in Cuba and Switzerland.
Between October 1999 and October 2016 he worked as a photo editor and photographer at the Latin American Desk of Agence France Presse in Montevideo. During this period he made Latin American coverages for the AFP, where he covered and edited from international summits to earthquakes and other news. In 2009 he worked as a teacher at the Tris photography school in Montevideo, coordinating a multimedia photography workshop ‘Imágenes en Movimiento’ (Images in Movement).
He has exhibited in Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Cuba, United States, France, Switzerland, and Uruguay. As a freelance photographer, he has published material in various international and national press media.
Since November 2016 he retired to run new personal projects in the framework of documentary photography and journalism.
