La muerte sale por el Oriente, 2015

According to the National Citizens Observatory on Femicide, 7 women die daily in Mexico due to extreme violence, making Estado de Mexico one of the federal entities with more cases, focused mostly in Ecatepec, Chimalhuacan and Nezahualcoyotl, the municipality where I live. ‘La muerte sale por el oriente’ is a project about the topic of gender violence ending in death in Estado de Mexico; it has three focal points; documentary photography, intervention of the territory and collective digital mapping. It is currently in process.

Sonia Madrigal

Born in Estado de Mexico. Earned a bachelor degree in Computer Science at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She began her training as photographer at the FARO de Oriente -with the photographer Mark Powell- and at the FARO Tláhuac. Her work concentrates on socio-cultural themes that take place in the metropolitan area of Ciudad de México (principally in the East). She was a scholarship holder of the ‘Jóvenes Creadores’ Program from the National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA) 2013-2014 generation.

In 2016, she became part of the Seminar on Photography Production at Centro de la Imagen under the tutorship of Verónica Gerber. She was chosen in 2016 to become part of En Construcción, the first collective Latin American photobook edited by Espacio GAF. She was part of the collective Encontraste, as a member, she won a scholarship in 2014 to assist to the Encuentro de Colectivos Fotográficos Iberoamericanos  E·CO/14 in the city of São Paulo.

Among the collective expositions in which she has participated are: Codes of conduct, final sample of the SPF at Centro de la Imagen, Ciudad de México 2017; Creation in Movement, from the ‘Jóvenes Creadores’ program at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, Ciudad de México 2016; II Photography Biennial Hector Garcia, Fundacion Hector Garcia, Ciudad de México 2015;  E·CO/14, Iberoamerican Festival of Performing Arts of Santo, São Paulo 2014; The Lightness of Abandonment, National Photographic Library from INAH, Pachuca 2014; Geographies in Dialog, Centro de la Imagen in Buenos Aires, 2012 and Motherland, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Roma MACRO, Italy, 2011.

Her work has been published in several media as the British daily newspaper The Guardian. She’s co-founder of the digital platform Mal d3 ojo.
